About The Chupacabra 5K/10K Night Trail Run

Run through the woods at night! This trail run start at 8:30PM at Lake Houston Wilderness Park, followed by a post-race party at the start / finish area. The course runs through heavily wooded dirt trails in pitch dark. A HEADLAMP OR FLASHLIGHT IS REQUIRED! It will be dark out there, so it’s up to you to provide your own quality lighting.  The trails can have many tree roots and an uneven surface, so paying attention to footing is critical. Trails will be marked with glow sticks, directional arrows and tape in the trees.

All runners will recieve a post race party, high quality tech shirt, a cool finisher medal, post race beer (for those of age), and Mingos Latin Cuisine food truck plate as part of your entry.  This is a fun run so no awards will be given but overall results and age group results will be posted.  Overnight camping is available and encouraged.

PRE-RACE DETAILS FOR REGISTERED RUNNERS!

Howdy Chupacabra de Houston Runner!

Race day is moving upon us like a chupacabra swiftly and silently races through the deep, dark woods.  It’s going to be a beautiful night at Lake Houston Wilderness Park! Please take time to read the info below.  It will help make your 2022 Chupacabra event go smoothly.

The race starts at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday Aug. 20 at Lake Houston Wilderness Park,25840 FM 1485, New Caney, TX 77357.

Like this event on Facebook. If there are any changes or updates arise this is the first place they are posted.  Many times it is an easy place to go to get last minute questions answered. Follow Run In Texas on Facebook too – it’s a great way to keep updated on upcoming Run In Texas events.

YOU MUST ARRIVE EARLY FOR THIS EVENT. You will need plenty of time to check in at the park entrance, park your vehicle and get your packet before the race start.

Packet pick up:  Race day packet pick up will be held at the Lake Houston Park Dining Hall on Saturday from 6:15PM until the race start at 8:30PM.  Free glow jewelry will be available at this time while supplies last. Enter the park at 25840 FM 1485, New Caney, TX 77357.

Directions to the race start/finish and packet pickup area: Follow park signage to the Pine Grove Dining Hall. This is where packet pickup will take place and is by parking and the race start/finish area.As you enter the park you will see Run In Texas directional signage, but this is for the race course only, NOT directing you to the start/finish. Click here to see a map showing the way to the Dining Hall and parking.

Park entry fees: If you registered by noon on Fri. Aug. 19 your park entry is included in your race fee – just give them your name at the gate. If you registered after that you must pay $3 entry because you will not be on the park entry list.  All spectators/non-running guests must pay $3 per person to get into the park.  Please have your cash $$ ready to hand over at the park gate.

Parking for the event. Follow police instructions on where to park. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON ANY GRASS OR PARALLEL PARK ALONG GRASS.  You may park at the Nature Center Parking then walk over the bridge to the dining hall from there.  When that is full we will be parking near the DINING HALL, adjacent to our start/finish area.  YOU WILL EXIT THE PARK OUT BAPTIST ENCAMPMENT RD (NOT THE WAY YOU ENTERED).  This is an easy one-way road out of the back of the park near our start finish.  When you exit the park gate take a right on Baptist Encampment Rd and it will take you out to 1485 just east of the park’s main gate.

If you parallel park along the road: PLEASEbe sure to park carefully on the side of the road when parallel parking and do not drive on any grass.  Careful — the park will issue tickets for any driving in undesignated areas. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON ANY GRASS.   After the event, exit straight out the BAPTIST ENCAMPMENT RD gate rather than turnaround and go back the way you entered the park.  Simply take a right on Baptist Encampment Rd and it will take you to FM 1485 just east of the main park entry.

Registration.  Online registration (go to http://www.runintexas.com/houstonchupa for link) is still open. Race day registration will also be available at the event during packet pick up.

Pre-race warmup: Trainers from Pathway Training will lead a pre-race warmup at about 8:15 p.m. near the start/finish to get you ready to run!

Start Times.   Both distances will start at 8:30PM sharp.  The start/finish is in front of the Dining Hall (where packet pickup is located).

The course. ALL TRAILS ARE CLOSED DUE TO EXTREME WETNESS PER PARK MANAGEMENT.  It rained A LOT at the park yesterday, and Run in Texas can attest to the fact that there was much mud and many deep puddles covering entire sections of trail.  They are fearful of trail damage to certain wetter areas with lots of runner traffic.  So, we are forced to run on the unpaved park roads, of which there are many and we will still get a nice, dark,  wildernessy, very Chupacabra-like 5K and 10K.  The roads are gravel and crushed rock so you will be on non-paved surface for the vast majority of each distance.  You will also keep your feet dry and shoes a little bit cleaner.  The 5K will be a loop with one water stop and the 10K will be a 4 mile loop with a 2.2 mi out and back at the second water stop about mile 3.  So 10K runners will hit 3 water stops total (second one hit twice).

Headlamps. Wear one or carry a flashlight.  YOU WILL NEED IT.

Switching events. If decide you want to switch from the 10K to the 5K please let our staff know before OR immediately after you cross the finish so you don’t show up in the 10K results with a 5K time.

Finisher medals. A friendly volunteer will hand you your medal once you cross the finish line!

Food.  Your entry includes a delicious meal served by Mingo’s Latin Kitchen food truck. A meal ticket is attached to your bib – just turn your ticket in when you’re ready to order. Veggie option available. Non-runners wishing to purchase food are also welcome to purchase food tickets for $15 from Run In Texas staff. The price includes a meal, beer, water and sports drink for non-runners.

Beverages. Post-race bottled water and sports drink for all runners.  We’ll be serving craft beer from Back Pew Brewing on tap for all (please have ID handy since you all look so young).

Timing Chips. Disposable chips are attached to each bib.  Please keep your bib visible on the front of shirt so your chip gets read.

Post Race Party. We will have some tables and chairs at the event but feel free to bring a chair to get comfy and enjoy a beautiful end-of-summer night. Mosquitoes are not currently bad, but it might be good to have bug spray handy for an evening in the woods.

Photos. Our photographer will be taking pictures throughout the event. They will be posted on the Run In Texas Facebook page within a few days of the event. Feel free to download, tag yourself and share.

Please thank the volunteers and sponsors! Thank you to Family Promise of Lake Houston, Pathway Training and Back Pew Brewing Co.

Please share this. Pass this info along to anyone who might benefit from this info.

Thanks for your support!
